- Recipient of annual Goodman-Chaney-Schwerner Award from Mississippi NAACP (2015)
- Recipient of Fannie Lou Hamer Humanitarian Award from the Hamer Institute at Jackson State University (2011)
- Founder, Board Chair, and Chief Volunteer at Poindexter Park After-School Club, Inc., serving 3rd and 4th graders from “inner-city” public elementary school in Jackson, Mississippi
- Member, National Board of Directors, Parents for Public Schools Inc. (1998-2001)
- Chair, Mississippi Coalition for Children and Public Education (2006-2007)
- Founding Board Member, Mississippi Center for Justice (2002-2009)
- Co-Chair, Jackson Public Schools Bond Issue Campaign (2017)
- Founding Board Member, Growing Up Knowing, Inc. (sex education)(2017-2019)
